Guy Ritchie certainly came barreling out of the gates with this film, especially when looking back at his most recent failures RocknRolla and Revolver. With all of the action, intrigue, explosions, and punches to the face befitting a summer blockbuster, this film barely stops for anything. The dialogue is witty and the plot is led along deviously by Sherlock Holmes, played by one of my favorite actors, Robert Downey Jr. Complementary to Downey was Jude Law, Rachel MacAdams, and Mark Strong, all playing solid characters and acting brilliantly. The set design and props were astounding, upstaged only by Hans Zimmer's soundtrack, which tied into the action and dialogue of the Sherlock Holmes more than most films. By the end of the film, the quick cut, after-the-fact explanations of how Holmes solved the problem at hand became somewhat bothersome and repetitive, but nevertheless necessary to the viewers. The unabashed plug-in to a possible sequel was callously executed, and left the film somewhat undercut. There is a sequel already announced, and though it hasn't even made it into the pre-production stages, I am already looking forward to it.
