*SUNDANCE #5: PLEASE GIVE

Please Give went incredibly in depth to the relationship of apartment building neighbors - a mother, father, daughter in one, a grandma and two visiting granddaughters in the other. The relationships between everyone change and evolve, and a couple of the more significant characters show real progression. Most of the characters, however, remain static, even exhibiting one of my filmic pet peeves: the demonstration of willful and unconcerned committal of damaging acts without reprimand. Beyond my own personal morals, it represents a loose end, unresolved by the conclusion of the film. The struggles these characters faced were unique and varied (mammograms, male facials, and tight jeans, etc.), providing a real, unglamorous look into several peoples' lives. The dialogue was fantastic, but in the end, very little was actually achieved - there was no complete resolve or conclusion. The 91 year old grandma played the most noticeable and outstanding performance, bringing her blunt lack of charisma to the people around her that need it. It was well acted on all accounts, and the cinematography solid, forcing me to absolutely respect and appreciate this film. I didn't like it, but I appreciated it.

In attendance: Director Nicole Holofcener and actors Amanda Peet, Catherine Keener, Rebecca Hall, Oliver Platt, and Thomas Ian Nicholas
