Avatar seemed to pull inspiration from a wide variety of films, i.e. Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Pocahontas, etc., but according to semiotics, every film - every story - is merely a retelling or reinterpretation of an archetypal story. This story seemed to pull heavily on a 'savior' figure, the protagonist even kneeling in a garden of sorts, praying to the main deity within the film. References and inspirations aside, however, this film was put together in a fantastically and completely other-worldy way. It didn't take the simple outs, it didn't take the easy road, but really brought the story all the way around. Yes, the trailer told the whole story, but the film was exciting throughout, regardless. The acting was probably the single largest detriment to the film, but even Lord of the Rings has laughable lines and poorly delivered dialogue. This film succeeded in accomplishing what I think it set out to do, and despite having to suffer through almost three hours of digital 3D, I would give this film a high approval. I would certainly not mind seeing it again, and even might plan on it in the near future.
