The Thing was an intriguing and captivating film if for no other reason than it utilized no visual effects or CGI of any sort. Luckily, it had many other admirable features, such as a fantastic score by legend Ennio Morricone, fantastic special effects by a first-timer in his early twenties, and fairly good acting. Kurt Russell carried the film, but there were several other performances worthy of note. Overall, I thought the film was a tense thriller, but not necessarily what I would call a scary film. There were scary elements and scary moments, but the mystery of where the danger lies was the most intriguing aspect of the film. It would be interesting to see this film as it would be done today, because looking back, it seems to be one of those films that pushed the envelope of the day, but might have overextended just a little bit. The story was there and all the elements were present, and though it could be vastly improved nowadays, The Thing still remains a very well done film.
