RECENT ADDITIONS:

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER, 2009 (!)

If you're looking for a cute film about a modern guy and a girl that's somewhat delusionally realistic, this could work. Being a non-linear mismatch of different styles (split screen, 8mm flashbacks, instructional video, God-like narrator), this film can be either hit or miss. Striking personal chords on a couple of occasions, this film was both enjoyable to watch at times, as well as extremely difficult. I thought the production design was immaculately constructed, the costuming almost perfect (for a modern, working, hipster generation), and the acting - though few actors there were - consistent and believable. The plot and characters have flaws that are far beyond an understandable level, but the relationships between characters are certainly true to life - almost painfully so. I managed to watch the beginning of this film three times before actually finishing it in a theater with a 35mm print, which provided (500) Days with a feeling far different than a DVD on TV. Either for that reason or that I was watching the film next to my girlfriend...maybe both.

I really liked this one. I'd honestly put it in my top 5 of the year. It seemed to stand tallest within the genre that usually rehashes similar motifs. An incredible Directorial debut. Biggest laugh had to be the Han Solo cameo -- perfect.

Underlining denotes a film seen in theaters, an asterisk (*) denotes an AFI film, an exclamation point (!) denotes repeated viewings of a film.
