I should just copy and paste my comments from Ong Bak 2, because Red Cliff achieved roughly the same end result, but I'll do my best to employ self-discipline and expand my comments. I feel that, like American cinema, certain Chinese films have inflated to the over-budgeted, lackluster blockbusters that serve only to satisfy the passing need for mindless entertainment. This film seemed like it was trying to be the pearl of modern Chinese film - employing CG effects on a titanic scale - but it fell far short of holding any excitement, or even lasting emotion. The acting was mediocre, the plot very overplayed, and the progression much too long to hold any lasting attention. I happened to spread this film over three days of watching, and I feel that if I hadn't done so, I wouldn't have been able to sit through it. I was entertained here and there by the discussion of ancient Chinese military strategy, and even for a fleeting second felt a desire to learn more about Chinese history, but time after time some flaw would pull me right back to utter discontent. I was so excited for this film, but Red Cliff disappointingly falls in line with the cinematic flops that are upstaged by their own trailers.
