FANTASTIC MR. FOX, 2009

In a Pixar-dominated world of kids films, it was nice to see a departure from computer generated animations, but while the stop-motion filmmaking - genius though it may be - always takes a little to get used to, something about Fantastic Mr. Fox never sat quite right. Whether it was the jittery motions, the anthropomorphizing of the animal characters, the much too quick-paced dialogue, or subversively adult commentary, I'm not sure, but something felt a bit off. I was never really captivated by this film and kept thinking to myself, 'Oh. This is what happens when Wes Andersen tries to do a kid's movie.' Even though there are big names (or voices) in this film, including some Andersen regulars (i.e. Jason Schwartzman), it didn't hold the same excerpt-style vision into the lives of these characters that Andersen typically exhibits. The lighting was phenomenal, and the story's resolution complete, but it wasn't really quite enough to prove this a memorable film.
