The awkward, geeky, older brother to Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko, The Box displays a somewhat trademark style, but is much too saturated to be taken seriously. Cameron Diaz plays the part of a physically handicapped housewife to James Marsden, a wanna-be astronaut. The plot is much too random, and though certain scenes can strike fear, embrace the weird, or evoke empathy in the viewer, the film as whole fails to achieve anything. Severe character flaws, over-the-top sci-fi side notes, and generally misread acting leads this to fall under the 'let's try to forget that was shot in Boston' category. Though I think this film achieves a (usually respectable) 'genre-less' position, touching on household drama, sci-fi thriller, murder mystery, and more, this film felt like a scatterbrained smattering of random thoughts. I was all too ready to like The Box, but I easily accepted defeat and realized it's mediocrity.
